getting around

For a quick getaway to some relatively inaccessible place, we can fly cheap in Europe on ryanair. As long as we don't want to carry on more than 15lbs of luggage.

Eurorail passes

Germany

pthreads suggests:

if you can take a train along the Rhine from the south up towards Bonn it's beautiful. Tons of castles just along the river. Really cool. Could perhaps work if you made a weird snakey trip coming to/from Belgium down towards Munich then up towards Berlin.

Munich

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich

kapuski says:

If you guys are history buffs then also check out Munich, it's like a completely different country if you compare it to Berlin. If in Munich then you have to visit Dachau concentration camp on a guided tour. Sure it's a bit of a downer, but I think it is important to realize the bad side of humanity, and there really is no better way to hit that ball home than to stand inside the gassing chambers and in front of the hanging beams, and ovens.

Nürburgring

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nürburgring

Info: http://heiser.net/documents/nurburgring/

0th lap should be done in a ring taxi, or bum a ride in the paddock.

You can rent a motorcycle! For 1/3 the price of renting an econobox from one of the track rental places!

If possible, we should investigate shipping gear there/back. If practical, it would be much safer.

Sleeping options include:

Weimar

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weimar

kapuski says:

very sleepy but beautiful small town with big parks, ruins (they actually are build to be ruins and never were anything else) "natural" caves with marble entrances and other strange but beautiful stuff. Goethe and other Weimar romantics lived there and wanted to build nice things for themselves, so it is full of little curiosities.

Glasgow

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow

As described by saruman-23, Glasgow has:

a) good access to the southern Highlands - the loch literally sits on the beginning of the Highlands - where the "southern UK" crashed into the "northern UK" and created the highlands. b) Lots of great little towns, pubs, tea houses etc.
