Japan 2007
From Definitelynotsafe Wiki
I've created this page to hold my plans for a trip to Japan in July 2007. There's too much to keep in my head, so I'm putting it down here.
This page contains Japanese text in UTF-8. Your computer is ready if this looks a bit like a tree -> 木

[edit] Lodging
For Tokyo, Taito Ryokan is a great little place, short on frills but long on character. It's a drafty wooden house (built shortly postwar) serving as an inn with a half-dozen rooms. Excellent location in downtown Asakusa: plenty of food and services in walking distance; five minutes to Senso-ji temple; ten minutes by subway to Ueno station and the world. 3000円 per person per night. That's about $25. Yes.
For Sendai, Toyoko Inn Nishi-Guchi Hirose-Dori. A twin room.
[edit] Meals
Will be determined on the ground. Mix of local shops and tourist-friendly restaurants. Sushi bars in malls, train-station boxed lunches (駅弁), convenience stores (コンビニ), bakeries, local eateries, noodle stands. Everything and anything. $25/day (~$275 total) is a good upper bound based on my experience in 2005.
[edit] Transportation
3-day Flexible pass for 10000円 ($82). Can be purchased inside the country, probably at the airport. One day is inbound N'EX, second day is Hayate Shinkansen up to Sendai, third day is Shinkansen back to Tokyo + N'EX.

[edit] What To Do?
- Venus Fort in Odaiba wikitravel. "An elaborately Venice-themed shopping mall, complete with marble fountains, artificial sunsets every 30 minutes and an Italian "mayor" reading out speeches from a balcony. All shops are geared for women and generally quite expensive, but it's worth visiting this just for the decoration." Ben: "I can't think of many places in the *world* we'd be more out of place. Let's do it."
- Torafugutei (Tokyo Ryokan eating guide, official). "Fugu. Watch out the poison. 2-14-15 Nishi-Asakusa"
- Kaminarimon, Sensoji, that whole Asakusa temple area. Maybe.
- Shinjuku - Metropolitan Government building
- Akihabara
- Ikebukuro. Ben: you suggested this one, add details :P
- Shibuya
- Crazy people in Harajuku?
- Buy a freakin nice camera for ridiculously cheap in 秋葉原。
- Hot spring bath at じゃこつ湯 a block from taito ryokan. How to Take a Bath.
[edit] Ava
Ava will be in Osaka, Japan from June 24th through August 26th. I will have my own apartment, and anyone who will be in Japan over summer is welcome to visit me and hang out for a few nights in my cramped one bedroom apartment. : ) I will also be traveling on a JR rail pass from August 26th through September 17th, and am possibly looking for travel companions.
